Sneak in Extra Steps with Your Little Ones

March 20, 2017

I've noticed lately that it gets to be the end of the day and I realize I didn't get a workout in or meet my step goal. As I sit in bed, I look back at my day and wonder when I could have fit it in... Can you relate?

In the past, I have been great about getting in an exercise class, but after having my daughter in October, I haven't been as active. At first, it was the recovery from the delivery. I put off exercising as I needed time to heal. And now with the responsibility of two kids, I was trying to figure out my new routine and how my "me time" of exercising can fit. I have been feeling more tired and sluggish lately and really need to schedule in that physical activity. I know I am a better mom when I do.

In being realistic, I know a full exercise class doesn't fit in to my schedule right now. So instead, I have made it a priority to get in as many stretches and steps that I can throughout the day. And with the endless energy of my 3 year old, I thought it would be a great idea to include him too! I found Cosmic Kids (www.cosmickids.com) from a recommendation from another mom. One morning, while my newborn was sleeping, my son and I enjoyeded 'Hot Air Balloonin'", "Bunny Bouncing" and dancing to the "Washing Machine Song". We had a blast and made some fun memories while getting in some extra steps!

Now, don't get me wrong, these are not 20, 30 or 60 minute shows, They are 2 to 3 minutes each. However, they keep my toddler entertained and you know you will do something many times once a toddler likes it. So, we did each program at least 2 or 3 times  - which was about 15-20 minutes of activity! This was 15-20 minutes more activity than I would have accomplished. I loved it! I especially enjoyed watching the smile on his face and looking at me to make sure we were doing the same moves.

We have made an effort to include these videos in to our days and even started doing the yoga shows! These are treasured times. I  know that I am showing him the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle while having meaningful, one-on-one time together.

How do you work out with your kids?
