What are your favorite things to bake? Do you make any substitutions to make it healthier? You don’t have to make a lot of changes to a recipe to make it healthier. Keep it simple – just one change can make a difference. And you don't have to find brand new recipes. Instead, you can modify your favorites!
Here are some of my go-to substitutions when baking:
Replace half the regular all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. I event use white whole wheat flour to keep the same color.
Reduce the sugar by ¼ - 1/3 (25-33%).
Chop chocolate chips (when adding them) in to smaller pieces so they are dispersed throughout the bread – and you can use fewer chocolate chips as you get the feel that you are having more by keeping them small.
Add 1 T. of ground flaxseed or chia seed for more fiber and heart-healthy omega-3.
Add some nuts for healthy fats and/or dried fruit for sweetness.
When making changes in baking, it’s best not to make more than 3 changes at a time.
